Your dog’s bed is where he sleeps. But let’s face it—it is also where he spends a lot of his time awake. And during some of that time, he may be feeling rambunctious. Maybe he is playing, perhaps he is bored, or he might be anxious. Any of these can lead him into chewing and tearing. And if he is on his bed, he will bite and tear at what is most available, which is the bed itself.

That is why your pooch needs an indestructible dog bed. Chances are good your search brought you here because you heard that Kong dog beds are chew-proof. Are they? The short answer is “no.” The longer answer is what this post is all about.

This guide will explain everything you need to know about Kong dog beds, which are chew-resistant but not indestructible. We will point you toward a few Kong dog beds that might suit your purpose, but also a couple of alternatives that are much more rugged and chew-proof.

Does My Dog Need an Indestructible Dog Bed?

Before we dive into our discussion about Kong dog beds, let’s first address this question: do you need to get your dog a chew-proof bed?

Well, that depends entirely on your dog. If your pet doesn’t chew or tear much, you probably can get away without one. But an indestructible dog bed might be right for your pet if any of the following are true:

Your dog has chewed through previous beds. Needless to say, if regular beds are unable to survive your aggressive chewer, it is time to replace them with something that will.

Your pet is a compulsive chewer. Some dogs chew compulsively. ASPCA suggests enlisting a behavioral expert if this is your situation. But in the meantime, a chew-proof bed will help.

You have your dog on a diet. Your pet may want to eat in between meals and snacks and might decide the bed looks tasty.

Your dog is bored, frustrated, stressed, or anxious. All of these are common psychological reasons for chewing. If possible, you should consider making lifestyle changes to help your dog feel calm, entertained, and happy. Regular exercise may also reduce destructive chewing. But having a chew-proof dog bed may still be necessary.

Chewing is just something your dog likes to do. With some dogs, chewing and tearing are simply in their personalities. In fact, chewing does not always represent a behavioral problem. Sometimes, it is just a healthy part of a dog’s life.

About Kong Dog Beds

The Kong Company (sometimes stylized “KONG”) is best known for making hard rubber chew toys that are hollowed out for treats. Indeed, the company’s products are famous for standing up to extreme chewers.

Although the chew toys are their most iconic products, Kong does make quite a few other products for dogs as well, including beds. Understandably, many people would assume that Kong dog beds are indestructible. After all, if you think "chewer," you think "Kong."

Are Kong Dog Beds Indestructible? (No)

Kong dog beds are not indestructible. They are chew-resistant, but that is not the same thing as chew-proof. Now, technically, no dog bed is completely 100% indestructible. That would be impossible. If we say a dog bed is “indestructible,” what we really mean is, “It can handle a lot of aggressive behavior before you need to replace it.” A determined enough dog can eventually destroy anything.

That said, Kong beds have some specific shortcomings that we need to address.

The fabric is simply not all that durable. There are other products on the market that are made out of much more rugged fabric that can better withstand chewing and tearing.

Kong beds do not offer the best value. While Kong beds are not the priciest dog beds on the market, they are not cheap either. With that in mind, it is worth paying more for a dog bed that will perform to your satisfaction. Otherwise, you will have to keep spending more money on replacement beds.

You might not find a suitable size. For whatever reason, Kong tends to make beds for large dogs. So, smaller pets might be better off with something more their size.

Critical Features Every Indestructible Dog Bed Needs

Now that you know why Kong beds are not the chew-proof beds you are looking for let's talk about what you should shop for when comparing products.

1. Materials

If you want your dog bed to last, you cannot skimp when it comes to materials. We suggest that you look for a product explicitly marketed as chew-proof, not just chew-resistant. Ballistic rip-stop fabric is ideal. Even if your dog can puncture the material, the tears should not spread.

2. Durability

The materials that a dog bed is made of are only one facet of its overall durability. You also need to consider other aspects of its construction, such as the quality of stitches and the locations of zippers and seams. If possible, zippers and seams should both be concealed.

3. Easy Cleaning

As with any other type of dog bed, a chew-proof dog bed should be easy to wash. Features that can help with this include a waterproof liner and a removable, machine-washable cover.

4. Size

It is important to get the correct size of bed for your pet. A chew-proof bed that is too small will not provide enough space to stretch out if desired. But one that is too big will not feel cozy enough and may also be too cold during the winter.

5. Design

Finally, indestructible dog beds come in different shapes and configurations, just like regular dog beds. Choose a type of chew-proof dog bed that is suitable for your pet based on how he prefers to sleep.

3 Chew-Resistant Kong Beds to Consider

Having discussed features and considerations that are important when shopping for an indestructible dog bed, we can look at some products.

To start, we will share a few Kong dog beds that are chew-resistant. After that, we will follow up with some chew-proof alternatives

Kong Bolster Cuddler Dog Bed

If you are in search of a chew-resistant bolster dog bed, the 22"L x 28"W x 7"H Kong Bolster Cuddler Dog Bed might just suit your needs. This bed features a navy blue polyester cover. Although it is unavailable in other colors, the navy should work well in most home color schemes.

KONG Bolster Cuddler Dog Bed Offered by Barker Brands Inc. (Navy Blue)

Even though this product is not chew-proof, it is actually fairly robust. The reinforced rip-stop fabric does a pretty good job of preventing large tears from forming. Plus, the reinforced steams are double-strength, making it harder to rip them open.

So, for a mildly to a moderately destructive dog, this bed might be sufficient. But a very destructive dog will chew through it, and likely faster than you think.

What you'll like: This chew-resistant dog bed is supremely comfortable with its cushioned bolsters. Dogs that require extra support for their spines can rest their heads on the bolsters. The bottom won’t slip on hardwood or tile floors, adding to this product’s safety.

What you should consider: Available in only one size, so it may not be right for all pets. The materials are only chew-resistant, not chew-proof. It is a pretty tough bed, but only if your dog is not super aggressive.

Kong Tough Plush Ultimate Slumber Lounger Dog Bed

The Kong Tough Plush Ultimate Slumber Lounger Dog Bed is an option if you are looking for a rectangular bed that is chew-resistant. It measures 40"L x 30"W x 9"H (available only in one size) and features a fairly open design, allowing your pet to stretch out. But there are bolsters at either end, offering additional support for pets that need it.

What you'll like: The material this bed is made from is tough enough to stand up to some chewing since it is rip-stop. Once again, however, it is not chew-proof. Washing this bed is super easy. Just throw it in the washing machine on cold. You can hang it to dry. The neutral color of the bed will be ideal for any home environment.

What you should consider: You’ll notice that this bed is a bit thin. This is an issue both from a support standpoint and a durability standpoint. The bed is expensive. You'll shell out a lot of cash compared not only to other Kong dog beds but also to some indestructible dog beds from other brands.

Kong Orthopedic Strong Foam Mat Dog Bed

One more Kong option that might be worthwhile if your dog is not super destructive is the Kong Orthopedic Strong Foam Mat Dog Bed.

KONG Orthopedic Foam Mat Dog Bed Offered by Barker Brands Inc. (Grey)

Once more, Kong has produced this product in one size, 38" L x 30" W x 5" H. It also is available in just one color, though it is a neutral tan that should be suitable for most interiors.

You can remove the cover to wash it, and one thing we like is that Kong at least made sure the zipper is concealed underneath. So, it will be more challenging (though not impossible) for your dog to get at it.

What you'll like: Made of orthopedic memory foam, this product is ideal for offering the support your dog needs for healthy joints, while the wide-open design gives your pet lots of room to sprawl. You can remove the cover and wash it in your washing machine for easy care.

What you should consider: Once again, this product's value is limited because it is not indestructible.

The Kong name is a strong one, and the company does make a lot of high-quality goods. But now you can see why they are not our top recommendation for indestructible dog beds. They do a great job making tough chew toys, but their expertise in that area has not translated into the beds they design.

3 Kong Bed Alternatives That Stand Up to Dogs Chewing

Now that you have had a chance to browse some Kong options for chew-resistant dog beds, we can move on to some alternatives. Both dog beds below are much tougher than the Kong dog beds! Are they impossible to chew through? No, but they can hold up to a lot more abuse.

K9 Ballistics Tough Bolster

Our first recommendation for a chew-proof dog bed is the K9 Ballistics Tough Bolster.

K9 Ballistics Tough Bolster Nesting Large Dog Bed - Washable, Durable and Waterproof Dog Beds - Made for Big Dogs, 34"x40", Blue

Unlike the Kong dog beds we shared above, this bed comes in four different sizes:

X-Large (38”x54”x5”)
Large (34”x40”x5”)
Medium (27”x33”x5”)
Small (18”x24”5”)

It is also available in four colors: black, blue, green, and tan. So, you can find the perfect fit for your pet and your interior.

Now, let’s talk a bit more about this product’s impressive durability. The cover is made of ballistic rip-stop fabric that actually stands up to scratching, digging, and chewing. The company states that when it first started trying to make dog beds, it actually used Kevlar. But testing revealed that the dogs could destroy the Kevlar. That meant that the company had to innovate an even stronger material. The resulting fabric is what this product is made of!

Additionally, the manufacturer hid the zipper so that your dog is not as likely to find it. Not only that, but K9 Ballistics stands behind its dog bed with its 120-day Chew Proof Promise. If your dog can damage the bed anytime inside that timeframe, you can apply for a store credit. You can use this to get a new dog bed.

What you'll like: The soft, cozy design gives your dog room to stretch, and also provides bolsters for extra support. It's designed with a waterproof cover you can remove to throw in your washing machine. The bed contains CertiPUR-US non-toxic, shredded foam. This high-quality material will cushion and comfort your pet and hold up to years of use. It also stays breathable for warm days.

What you should consider: When you are closing the zipper around corners, sometimes you can run into issues. Worst case scenario, the zipper can separate, necessitating a replacement cover. Just take your time when zipping, and you should not run into this problem.

K9 Ballistics Chew Proof Elevated Dog Bed

If you want an indoor-outdoor dog bed that offers superior comfort and breathability for hot days, you can think about getting the K9 Ballistics Chew Proof Elevated Dog Bed.

K9 Ballistics Chew Proof Elevated Dog Bed - Chewproof - All Aluminum - Indoor/Outdoor - Ripstop Ballistic Fabric - Ships Assembled - Fits Inside Large Crates 41" x 27" x 5", Black

This product is available in three different sizes:

X-Large (47”x29”x5”)
Large (41”x27”x5”)
Small: (29”x18”x3.5”)

You can choose any of three colors: black, tan, or “snow camo.”

As with the K9 Ballistics Tough Bolster, the K9 Ballistics Chew Proof Elevated Dog Bed is designed to be as close to indestructible as it can get. It can stand up to scratching, chewing, digging, and other aggressive behaviors.

The manufacturer backs this product up with its Chew Proof Armored Warranty. Once again, you get 120 days to try the product with no risk. If your dog damages it, the company will give you a voucher you can use to order a replacement bed at no cost.

What you'll like: It's aluminum frame is lightweight but also highly resistant to damage. The durable nature of this bed not only protects it from damage from your dog but also makes it suitable for indoor or outdoor use. The elevated design will keep your pet cool in the summer heat.

With its moisture- and dirt-resistant surface, this dog bed stays clean pretty easily. When you need to wash it, wiping it down is a breeze. If necessary, you can also hose it down. Your floor stays clean if your dog has an accident, thanks to a waterproof membrane. The only assembly step you need to do when your dog bed arrives is to connect the legs. They screw in, so you don't have to worry about tools or skills.

What you should consider: Even though this is a very durable product, extra-destructive dogs have been known to tear through the material successfully. Still, it is a lot stronger than many “chew-resistant” products we have encountered.

K9 Ballistics Tough Orthopedic Dog Bed

If you need an indestructible dog bed that is also orthopedic, the K9 Ballistics Tough Orthopedic Dog Bed is a great choice.

K9 Ballistics Tough Orthopedic Dog Bed Large Nearly Indestructible & Chew Proof, Washable Ortho Pillow for Chewing Puppy - for Large Dogs 40"x34", Black

This bed comes in the following sizes:

Giant: 68"x40"x5"
X-Large: 54"x38"x5"
Large: 40"x34"x5"
Small: 24"x18"x5"

As you can see, the largest size for this chew-proof dog bed is much larger than the others. So, it also is worth considering if either of the other recommended dog beds are too small. You can choose from four different colors for this bed: black, blue, green and tan.

What you'll like: You will be impressed with how well this mattress maintains its shape. The CertiPUR-US foam provides the support that your dog needs for healthy joints. This dog bed is backed by the same 120-day warranty as the others by this manufacturer. The ballistic nylon cover is not only tough, but also stands up to moisture, hair and dirt. You can usually just wipe it clean. If the cover needs a deeper wash, you can use your washing machine. There is a water-resistant lining that will protect the mattress even from incontinence.

What you should consider: If you remove the pad from the cover for cleaning, be aware that you might struggle to get it back inside. But it is supposed to be this way, and the overall design is excellent.
